On October 2, The Organization of American States (OAS) approved a resolution calling on Nicaraguan authorities to free political prisoners, restore civic liberties, and disclose the whereabouts of people who have been forcibly disappeared. The resolution establishes a group to follow up and recommend potential coordinated action regarding demands made to Nicaragua. These include establishing conditions for fair elections and releasing political detainees. Since 2018 protests, Nicaragua's Co-Presidents Daniel Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo, have restricted civil liberties severely, with the latest move being a ban on opposition participation in future elections last month.
The OAS' first meeting of foreign ministers since seven years ago saw mostly delegates instead of full ministerial attendance; Christopher Landau, Deputy Secretary of State from Washington, represented the US. The resolution aims to address the ongoing democratic crisis in Nicaragua beyond mere verbal condemnation, as emphasized by OAS Secretary-General Albert Ramdin to Reuters.
