On September 29, Italy concluded its troop withdrawal from Iraq, ending a 12-year military presence there. The majority of Italian personnel were withdrawn by March 2026 following an air strike near their base in the Kurdistan region. Italian forces had participated in both the U.S.-led Operation Inherent Resolve against ISIS and NATO's advisory mission to build Iraqi security capacity. As part of this transition, two Carabinieri officers will remain under the EU's civilian mission with Iraqi approval. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto emphasized that the withdrawal signals a shift towards increased self-reliance in Iraq’s security matters.
